Surgery Process After Covid 19 Vaccine: Since December 2019, the disease caused by the Covid-19 virus has ravaged our country, like the whole world. After March 2020, surgical operations other than emergency operations were stopped with the recommendation of the Ministry of Health. As of June, the surgeries started again. However, it was recommended not to have a surgical operation for at least 14 days in those who have had corona disease. Today, with the start of the Covid-19 vaccine, the question of whether surgical operations will be performed and, if so, how many days after the corona vaccine will be made, has come to the fore.

WHAT IS THE CORONA VACCINE?

Vaccination is the process of giving the body a weakened or dead form of the disease-causing organism or a protein fragment to increase the body’s immunity. After vaccination, the immune system in our body kicks in and we start to produce antibodies. On average, it takes 14 days for our antibodies to form. After applying the Covid-19 vaccine, it is necessary to ensure that sufficient antibodies are formed. We look at it with the antibody test done daily. However, in this period after vaccination, there are some points to be considered in order for antibodies to be formed at a sufficient rate. There are some points to be considered about surgical operations to be performed under general anesthesia and some medications that should be used during this time.

Surgery Process After Covid 19 Vaccine

In the first few days after the corona vaccine, there may be high fever, weakness, malaise and muscle aches. If surgery is performed within a few days immediately after vaccination, complications related to general anesthesia or possible post-operative infections may be confused with findings caused by the vaccine. If the differential diagnosis and complication management is not done properly, unexpected problems may occur.

Some drugs used in general anesthesia or the surgery itself may impair the immune system’s response. At the same time, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) used after surgery can reduce the immune response to some extent. Considering that antibody response will occur in the first 14 days after vaccination, it may be better to postpone planned (elective-non-emergency) surgical operations during this period.

In conclusion;

All kinds of emergency surgery can be performed in the post-vaccine period, there is no restriction for this.

– Considering that immune response may be affected in planned (elective-non-emergency) surgeries after vaccination, it would be reasonable to postpone the operation for approximately 14 days.

– If painkillers, which we call NSAIDs, will not be used after the surgery, the patient can be vaccinated after the patient is stable. However, it would be more appropriate to postpone the surgical operations in order to make a differential diagnosis in the complications.
